In the home improvement industry, the quality and effectiveness of insulation is rated by a rating system called the R-Insulation Rating. The lowest R-insulation rating, R-1, reflects back 50% of all heat reaching it. As the R rating increases each step, it becomes 50% closer to reflecting all heat than the previous rating- the higher the rating, the better. Therefore, a building material with an R-rating of 2 will send back 75% of all heat, where one with a rating of 3 will send back 87.5%, and so on.
The R-insulation can be compromised by two major factors. One is that a basement walls' R-Insulation rating is only applicable if there is a long, unbroken sheet of insulation with no openings to allow cold to stream through. Another factor is the long-term quality of the insulation. Insulation that is damp, moldy, or rotting will have a fraction of the insulation rating of other materials. Additionally, some building materials use a very reliable insulation rating but use metal framing, which lowers its overall R rating.
